I should have done more.

I should have done more when Obama was president.

Civilians were killed while Obama was president, by drones piloted from far away. Those civilians were dehumanized and othered because they happened to live in a place near enemies of our state.

Abdulrahman Anwar al-Awlaki (August 26, 1995 – October 14, 2011) was a Yemeni-American 16-year-old who was killed while eating dinner at an outdoor restaurant by a drone airstrike in Yemen on October 14, 2011. 1

Black Americans were killed by Police while Obama was president. In record numbers.

Michael Brown Jr. (May 20, 1996 – August 9, 2014) graduated from Normandy High School in St. Louis County eight days before his death. At the time of his death, he was 18 years old. He was two days from starting a training program for heating and air conditioning repair at Vatterott College technical school. 2

I was upset. I posted some stuff on facebook and twitter. But I could have done more. I should have done more. It took Donald Trump for me to get angry, to get active. People on the right say, "this was Obama's thing, why weren't you mad at him?" I was mad at him, I just wasn't mad enough.

And for this, I apologize.

People of Color, especially the Black people whose work I've seen on twitter and around the internet, voiced this clearly: they've been In This Fight for decades, centuries. Where have we been? I could have been angry before.

President Obama cultivated a sense of complacency in me. No matter how many bad things he did, I thought the arc of history would keep on bending on its own.

And for this, I apologize.

So I'm going to Do More. I'm not sure what that looks like, other than: badger my representatives, stand up and call out injustice when I see it, and importantly reflect and boost the voices of PoC who have been right about this all along.
